Five Muscle-Building Mistakes Women Must Avoid

Building muscle isn’t just about lifting weights—it’s about doing it the right way. Many women struggle to see progress, not because they aren’t working hard, but because certain habits are holding them back. If you're putting in the effort but not seeing the results, it may be time to reassess your approach. Here are five common mistakes that could be sabotaging your muscle-building journey.

1. Not Eating Enough Protein

Muscle growth requires protein, yet many women don’t consume enough. If you’re skimping on protein, your body lacks the essential building blocks needed for muscle repair and growth. Aim for a high-quality protein source at every meal—think lean meats, eggs, Greek yogurt, and plant-based options like tofu or lentils.

2. Doing Too Much Cardio

Cardio is great for heart health, but excessive amounts can burn through muscle instead of building it. If your goal is muscle growth, prioritize strength training over long cardio sessions. Incorporate resistance exercises at least 3-4 times a week while keeping cardio in check to support, rather than hinder, your muscle-building efforts.

3. Avoiding Heavy Weights

Many women fear lifting heavy because they don’t want to “bulk up.” The truth is, muscle-building requires progressive overload—challenging your muscles with heavier weights over time. Lifting heavier doesn’t mean you’ll look bulky; it means you’ll build lean, strong muscles and boost metabolism.

4. Inconsistent Training

Muscle-building requires consistency. Skipping workouts or following an inconsistent routine slows progress. Create a structured plan that ensures you’re training all major muscle groups regularly, with progressive resistance to continuously challenge your body.

5. Neglecting Recovery

Your muscles grow when you rest, not just when you train. Skipping rest days, not getting enough sleep, and failing to manage stress can all interfere with muscle recovery. Prioritize rest, hydration, and proper nutrition to support your body’s recovery process and maximize muscle gains.

Everyone is searching for the next "extraordinary" fix, the exciting new routine, or the high-intensity program that promises to change everything. But in that time, I’ve also observed that the people who are truly, lastingly healthy—the ones who seem calm, focused, and consistently on track —aren't doin...
Cool, Calm, & Collected: Finishing the Year Strong
Why we aren't waiting until January 1st to build resilience. Most people treat December like a "throwaway" month. They let the holiday stress pile up, the nutrition slide, and the workouts disappear, telling themselves they will fix it all when the ball drops on New Year's Day. But at Brooktree, we don't operate like that. We don't wait for calendar dates to take control of our lifestyle mana...

It often makes you wonder: which of these trends are actually supported by solid, life-changing data?
