What Actually Happens When You Embrace the Cold? (And Why You Should)

We often talk about comfort here at Brooktree. Finding that peace and quiet, enjoying the sun, and building a life that feels good. But sometimes, the best way to appreciate comfort is to deliberately step out of it.

I recently came across a breakdown of what happens to the human body during a 30-day cold shower challenge. And looking at the science, it’s not just about "toughing it out." It’s about waking up dormant survival mechanisms that our modern, temperature-controlled lives have put to sleep.

Here is what actually happens when you trade your warm shower for the cold:

  • The "Cold Shock" is Real (and Useful): The first few seconds are a full-body alarm. Your heart rate spikes and you gasp for air. But this fights-or-flight response actually trains your nervous system to handle stress better. You are literally teaching your body to stay calm under pressure.

  • A Natural High: Cold exposure triggers a massive release of dopamine and norepinephrine—neurotransmitters that boost focus, alertness, and mood. Some studies show dopamine increases by 250%. It’s a natural, legal high without the sugar crash or the caffeine jitters.

  • Metabolism & Immunity: We all have "brown fat" (the good kind that burns energy to create heat). Cold water activates it, potentially improving insulin sensitivity and metabolism. Plus, regular cold exposure has been linked to a stronger immune system, with some studies showing a significant drop in sick days for those who practice it.

  • Circulation & Recovery: Athletes have known this for years. The cold constricts blood vessels, and when you warm up, they dilate, flushing out the system. It’s fantastic for reducing inflammation and muscle repair.

  • Mental Resilience: This is my favorite part. Choosing to step into freezing water every morning is a daily victory. It builds a "discipline muscle" that spills over into your business, your relationships, and your life. If you can handle the cold at 6:00 AM, that stressful email at 10:00 AM doesn't feel so big.

It’s simple, it’s free, and it’s effective. It’s not a replacement for a holistic lifestyle, but it is a powerful tool to add to your practice.

As we look toward a fresh chapter, most people focus on changing their bodies. This year, I want to talk about how we can upgrade the 'CEO' that runs the whole operation: your brain. We’ve all heard it a thousand times: exercise is good for you. We do it to fit into our clothes better, to keep our hearts ticking, or maybe just because we feel like we should. But after 25 years in the health an...
