In this article, we’ll dive into six of the most common food intolerances, how they impact your health, and what you can do about them.

Food Intolerance vs. Food Allergy: What’s the Difference?

First, let’s clear up a common misconception. Food allergies trigger your immune system, while food intolerances affect your digestive system. Intolerances can lead to bloating, cramps, migraines, and even fatigue. Unlike allergies, they’re often harder to pinpoint but can significantly disrupt your day-to-day health.

Now, let’s look at the top six most common food intolerances.

 

1. Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance affects about 68% of the world’s population. It occurs when your body lacks lactase, the enzyme needed to digest lactose, the sugar in milk and dairy products. Symptoms include bloating, diarrhea, and stomach cramps shortly after consuming dairy.

While it’s more common in people of Asian, African, or indigenous descent, anyone can develop lactose intolerance, especially as enzyme production naturally decreases with age.

2. Fructose Malabsorption

Fructose malabsorption impacts 30-40% of people worldwide, though many cases go undiagnosed. This intolerance occurs when your body struggles to absorb fructose, a natural sugar found in fruits, honey, and processed foods. Symptoms typically include bloating, diarrhea, and gas.

Gut health plays a significant role here. People with pre-existing digestive conditions like IBS are more prone to fructose malabsorption.

3. Gluten Sensitivity

Gluten sensitivity encompasses a spectrum of issues, from non-celiac gluten sensitivity to celiac disease. While celiac disease affects about 1% of the population, up to 13% may suffer from non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Symptoms include digestive discomfort, fatigue, brain fog, and joint pain after consuming foods like bread, pasta, or beer.

The challenge? Gluten sensitivity often doesn’t show up on standard tests, leading to underdiagnosis.

4. Histamine Intolerance

Histamine intolerance is rare but disruptive, affecting about 1% of people worldwide. It occurs when your body struggles to break down histamines—chemicals found in aged cheeses, wine, and fermented products. Symptoms can include headaches, rashes, nasal congestion, and digestive upset.

A genetic deficiency in the enzyme responsible for breaking down histamines often underlies this intolerance. Gut issues or certain medications can also trigger it.

5. Salicylate Sensitivity

Salicylates are natural chemicals in fruits, vegetables, spices, and medications like aspirin. Sensitivity to salicylates can lead to symptoms like headaches, rashes, nasal congestion, and even asthma.

While there isn’t a strong genetic link, some individuals are more predisposed to experiencing sensitivity.

6. Caffeine Sensitivity

Caffeine sensitivity manifests as jitteriness, rapid heartbeat, or insomnia after consuming even small amounts of coffee, tea, or energy drinks. It’s largely genetic, linked to variations in the CYP1A2 gene, which affects how quickly your body metabolizes caffeine.

Managing Food Intolerances

Food intolerances can feel overwhelming, but they’re manageable. Here are some steps to take:

  • Try an Elimination Diet: Remove potential triggers like gluten, dairy, or fructose for 2-4 weeks, then reintroduce them one at a time to identify the culprits.

  • Use Supplements: Probiotics and digestive enzymes can help. For instance, lactase supplements aid lactose digestion, and DAO supplements support histamine breakdown.
